Description:
A description of the syntax of particles and non-pronominal clitics in a sample of lowland South American languages with a view toward identifying parameters that influence the positioning of these particles. Includes a discussion of those elements whose positioning is apparently controlled by discourse-pragmatics rather than, or in addition to, grammar. This work was originally presented at the Working Conference on Amazonian Languages held at the University of Oregon in August 1987.
