Abstract:
The Cora evidential particle yee is used in a variety of ways, all of which relate in one way or another to the schema that lies behind human verbal conversation. In this paper, I show that a satisfying analysis of these usages must take into account a wide variety of historical, pragmatic, semantic and morphosyntactic considerations, as well as one or more mental models. A strictly linear account of the grammaticalization of yee that assumes a single path of development fails to characterize a number of the interrelationships of the usages of yee that are described nicely by a schematic network in the Langackerian sense.
