Description:
Familiar Subanen metaphors quoted in this text include a person living to be so old and confused that he goes fishing on the fire table, yet remaining so swift and agile that he can run to the tip of a sugarcane leaf. These figures of speech are part of incantations recited to cancel the effect of an unlucky palm line, spells employing doublets and symbols such as red and white and east and west, representing good and bad luck. The ritual is an example of the practice of imitative magic.
