Abstract:

Acceptance or rejection of a language is influenced by the attitudes of the speakers of the language. The present study focuses on the attitudes of three varieties of Quechua spoken in Eastern Apurimac: Cuzco Quechua, Ayacucho Quechua, and Apurimac Quechua, with the object of determining which variety was considered the most prestigious. Six first-language Quechua speakers interviewed 900 speakers of the Quechua spoken in five provinces of Apurimac between July and September of 2004. The objective of the interview was to determine if the variety of Quechua of eastern Apurimac was widely enough accepted among the speakers of Quechua of the region in order to procede with the translation of the New Testament and produce literacy materials in that variety.
