Abstract:
This paper presents the results of a sociolinguistic survey of Eastern Kayah Li spoken in Mae Hong Son province, Thailand. The purpose of this survey was to determine the need for vernacular literature in Eastern Kayah Li, and to assess the possibility of adaptation of vernacular literature from Western Kayah Li, a related language. A team of three researchers collected wordlists and administered individual and group interviews in 10 Eastern Kayah Li villages in order to determine the vitality of the Eastern Kayah Li language, levels of reported comprehension with and attitudes toward other Kayah Li speech varieties, and the central or prestige dialect within Eastern Kayah Li in Thailand.
