Abstract:
The idea of providing multiple native English speakers in every single village and town in Papua New Guinea is an impossible dream. Where would all of the speakers come from? Who would pay their salaries? Why would the people want to come?
The dream is becoming a reality as SIL-PNG, BTA, and NDOE E-Learning partner together to bring “Education for Life” to Papua New Guinea. “Education for Life” is the first series of apps in the world that use native English speakers reading educational content and providing interactive games on smart phones. Papua New Guinea will be the first country in the world to provide “My Talking Library”, “A Teacher in Every Hand,” and other innovative Android apps for free to all people in Papua New Guinea.
“My Talking Library” will be a series of grade level books that content specifically designed to supplement the learning that takes place in classrooms. “A Teacher in Every Hand” will be a series of grade level games that engage the children (and probably the parents) in the various subjects.
What will make “Education for Life” unique is the proposed partnership between SIL-PNG, PNGBTA, and NDOE. SIL-PNG proposes to train five Papua New Guinean university graduates in creating apps. PNGBTA proposes to use their connections with the remote villages to promote the apps. NDOE E-Learning proposes to fund the program and provide most of the content.
Sustainability is an important part of “Education for Life”. Smart phones are currently the best option for sustainability. Android phones can be purchased for as little as K145 and with a micro-SD card, a large amount of data (educational apps) can be stored and updated. Solar powered lights make recharging Android phones affordable and sustainable.
