Description:
This poster presentation describes SooSL, general-purpose software being developed by SIL that can be used to make a dictionary for any sign language. It includes all the basic functionality required for a bilingual dictionary: headword, grammatical category, multiple senses and glosses in one or more languages, example sentences, dialect variation. It uses video for signs, example senses, and comments. It is designed especially for Deaf people to use to document their own languages, and thus requires minimal background in linguistics. Signs can be found either by gloss or by lookup by phonological parameters: handshape, location, movement and non-manuals. Lookup by parameters is made more effective by using broad categories, rather than precise coding such as might be needed for transcription or analysis. It runs on Windows and Mac computers, and is available for download as open-source software from http://www.soosl.net.
