Abstract:

The Kabalay language, spoken by a community of speakers in the Tandjilé prefecture of southern Chad, is little documented. The present report of this language and of its sociolinguistic situation is largely based on the findings of a visit made to the Kabalay region in April 2000. A research team under the authorization of the Ministère de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche Scientifique conducted a sociolinguistic survey which was principally directed at Kabalay, but which also touched on the neighboring and related Nancere language, likewise located in the Tandjilé prefecture. The survey includes word lists in Kabalay and Nancere.
