Journal of Translation - General Information and Submission Guidelines

<< RETURN TO JOURNAL OF TRANSLATION

The Journal of Translation (JOT) is an academic journal of translation theory and practice with a special interest in sacred text translation and in translation involving local languages and cultures. Its purpose is to encourage scholarship, enlighten the reader, stimulate thought and discussion, and promote cross-cultural and cross-linguistic dialogue.

JOT is published online twice annually by SIL International. SIL is not responsible for producing and distributing print copies. Article PDFs may be freely downloaded subject to the Terms of Use, but must not be published elsewhere without express written permission from the publisher.

Submit via Scholastica

JOT welcomes submissions of previously unpublished articles, book reviews, and short notes that deal explicitly with a topic of translation. Manuscripts should not be submitted to more than one journal at the same time. Authors pay no article processing charges (APCs).

Submissions should make a clear, helpful, and fresh contribution to translation theory or practice. Preference is given to articles of fewer than 10,000 words (2,000 words for a book review) accompanied by an abstract of no more than 250 words.

Anonymized manuscripts should be submitted via Scholastica. Contact the editors via email if you encounter any difficulties.

Style and Format Requirements

Submissions should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th Edition, with in-text citations and complete bibliography. See JOT - Citation Format for more information.

Manuscripts submitted for publication should be well-formed, with an introduction, conclusion, section headings, and reference list. Authors should ensure that their submission has been proofread by a highly proficient speaker of the primary language of the submission. Any use of machine- or AI-generated content must be disclosed at the time of submission.

Review and Publication Process

Submissions will be evaluated by the editors, members of the Editorial Board, and outside reviewers through a blind peer review process. Authors will receive a decision of either accept, reject, or revise and resubmit.

If a manuscript has been accepted for publication, editors will correspond with authors concerning any necessary changes. Authors will approve the final version of their manuscript before its publication online on the JOT web site.
