The Translator's Workplace Mission and Product Benefits

Translator's Workplace Mission

Translator's Workplace is more than a program, it's a commitment to affordably provide the best electronic resources available to Bible Translators around the world.  The two products, TW Folio and TW Logos have a common ancestry and share that same common goal. Some features are specific to Logos, yet there are other features, particularly BART, that remain unique to the TW Folio version. TW Folio 5.1 is now offered as a download as well as a DVD. TW Logos is currently offered as a download, and will be offered as a DVD when it is ready to serve users with limited internet connections.

Translator's Workplace Folio continues to serve translators with new resources.

For two decades, TW Folio was developed from the ground-up to collect resources that would make an impact on Bible Translation and pair the resources with an interface to make them accessible.  This functional Folio interface includes the cumulative resources familiar within the past releases of TW. Yet, while the interface has changed very little over time, the resources have continued to grow. TW has stood alone as the go-to resource for Bible Translators in countless languages.  TW Folio 5.1 is the latest release of TW Folio, including new and updated resources.

Rationale for a new version of Translator's Workplace (TW Logos)

Unfortunately, Folio Views, the engine TW Folio is based upon, has not received program updates in many years.  Striving for an alternative, the TW team has worked diligently to offer TW resource titles delivered within the Logos Bible Software platform.  TW Logos is forward-compatible, based on an engine that is in active cross-platform development. TW Logos imports most of the familiar TW resource titles onto a new platform with its own different set of benefits for Bible Translation. There are also many features and resources acquired through partnership with Logos available only in the new release of TW Logos. As a result of the sheer number of resources to convert, there are some important resources (like AGNT+) that are not yet converted from Folio format and are not immediately available in Logos.  For those who choose TW Logos, these resources will be automatically updated (via internet access) to your TW collection as they become available.  We understand the "cost" of learning new tools. TW Logos is new and different, but offers compatibility with new platforms and advantages into the future.  As time permits, the TW Logos user will see more and more of the TW Folio resources distributed with TW Logos edition.

Features of TW Folio 5.1

Original Language Research Through BART 5.3.1

  • The Biblical Analysis and Research Tool (BART) is included only with TW Folio, and is a shining example of a tool developed for Bible Translators. This tool offers detailed interlinears of the New Testament, Old Testament, and Septuagint coupled with tools for viewing, searching and even doing your own analysis.
  • Greek New Testament (UBS 4th Revised Edition) with AGNT Morphology and tags (Friberg et al.)
  • Hebrew Old Testament (Provided in BART for Folio)
  • Septuagint (LXX) (1935)

New Resources!

  • TW Folio 5.1 contains 74 updated resources not in 5.0 including a collection of new French Resources not yet in TW Logos.

Current Access to Classic TW Resources

  • In addition to many new resources added in TW Folio 5.1, essentially all TW resources offered in the TW Folio 5.0 release are currently available in TW Folio 5.1.

Familiar TW Look & Feel

  • For over 10 years the TW Folio user interface has not changed significantly, except for adding resources. For those who have been using TW for some time, that gives TW Folio a familiar look and feel. This also means that training materials available for TW 5.0 will continue to work for 5.1.

Designed specifically for translators and consultants

  • TW Folio was designed from the ground up with Bible translators and consultants in mind. As a result, some may prefer the familiar and targeted features and interface of TW Folio. Logos was designed with an emphasis on Bible study and exegesis, but through the addition of TW Translation resources that complement its features, TW Logos will serve the Bible Translator in a new and different way.

Runs well on low-power systems

  • Folio was designed to be light, and this makes it ideal for computers that do not have system resources to spare.  It only requires 64MB of free resources to run.

Multiple Desktops or Scroll Groups can be used simultaneously!

  • Integration of Desktops and scroll groups allow a wide variety of possibilities for displaying resources in one or multiple instances of the TW 5.1 program.

Arrange TW Windows

  • This tool allows the quick and easy setup of the panes that display the resources. The desired arrangement can then be saved as a desktop for future use.

Foregrounding of Scroll Groups

  •  All the members of a specific scroll group can be brought forward on the screen for viewing.

Multiple Occurrences

  • TW Folio allows the user to have multiple occurrences of TW open at the same time (not just multiple windows open within a single occurrence). This allows one to split resources between different windows by either resource type or language.

Proposition Splits

  • Using BART, you can split propositions yourself in the original languages to better see the referents of the clauses.

Windows Version

  • TW Folio is designed for Windows. This includes Windows 2000 through the latest versions of Windows 8. New computers are currently being shipped with 64-bit versions of Windows. TW Folio is not fully compatible with 64-bit Windows, and must be put in Windows XP Compatibility Mode to be run, disabling some of the advanced integration with and security of Windows.
  • Note: (Some users have had success installing TW Folio in Linux using Wine.)

BART 5.3.1 Final Review completed!

  • Bart has not only research tools for Original Languages, but tools for building your own analysis. BART & AGNT+ provide the user with researched and peer reviewed links to TW resources.  The editors have made sure that each link points to the most useful location, rather than relying on searches that could be misleading.

Coming Interlinear Bibles (Available soon)

  • The AGNT+ Interlinear Bible that has been available in BART is a collaboration between several publishers and SIL, and is next in line for conversion to the Logos format, and will be available as soon as possible.

Bible Word Study, Passage and Exegetical Guides

  • Logos’s Exegetical guide offers word-for word exegetical helps from multiple resources at your fingertips. You only need to open the individual resources to read further.
  • The Passage guide, in the same way, collects information from commentaries and Bibles on the current passage and displays it in an easy-to-use manner.
  • Explore an individual Bible Word, not only in your dictionaries, but interact with charts of renderings in various Bibles to learn how other translators have translated it.

Windows and Mac Versions

  • TW Logos has equivalent resources and features on both Windows and Mac. Install TW Logos on your Mac without Virtualbox or Parallels! You can even install Logos on multiple computers or devices that you own and use, as the license follows you. Logos 5 Runs on Windows 8,7,Vista as well as Mac OS 10.6.8 or higher. Logos 4 (with all resources, but a few missing features) is available for Windows XP and Mac OS 10.5. See note in Mobile Devices about Windows RT.

Use Logos on Mobile Devices (Tablets & Smart Phones)

  • One of the strongest advantages of TW Logos is that it runs on newer, popular mobile devices. Logos has developed software for their titles to be used on the iPad, Android Tablets, Kindle Fire, iPhone, and Android Phones. While you may not choose to do Translation from a smartphone, You can open, search, and read two resources at a time on your mobile device. (Note: The Logos interface for mobile devices is designed primarily to work online, i.e. while the user is connected to the internet. If a user wants to work offline, they can choose to download a selection of key resources onto the device.)
  • Note: Logos is new to the Windows Surface RT market. As of October 2013, Logos’ Windows RT App is immature, but improving. Keep this in mind when making purchases.

Classic TW Resources

  • In addition to the new resources in TW Logos, a large part of the TW experience is using the classic set of resources from Folio.
  • Some resources are not yet available in Logos format because they still need to be individually converted to Unicode and to the Logos format.  If you have an internet connection, you will receive these updates [at no additional charge] as soon as they are available.

Powerful Library Searches

  • One of the most obvious strengths of the Logos engine is that it is designed to search across resources, i.e. in multiple books simultaneously. The results are then arranged by your preference into categories grouped by resource.
  • Search multiple Bibles by word, phrase, grammatical category, Greek, Hebrew, or the surface language.

Expandability

  • The TW team will continue to publish and negotiate new agreements for resources that will be available to you in future releases of TW Logos.
  • Use your existing Logos library with Translator's Workplace.  Your TW resources will integrate with any purchased resources to offer you a more full experience.  Do you own BDAG in Logos? It will also appear in your Exegetical guides and word studies. Do you have a favorite commentary that is not in TW, you can get that too.  Logos currently offers over 36,000 titles! Beyond the “Base Package” of TW, many free and paid resources are available for download or purchase directly from Logos.

New Resources!

  • Other resources, such as the latest release of a given commentary or certain Logos-specific titles like the Lexham English Bible are available in Logos and not in Folio.

Automated Updates and Online Collaboration

  • Logos is designed to easily update and add resources online. We can provide revisions to you as they come. (Note: These updates can be large, so updates can be disabled or postponed by the user.  To meet the needs of those with less-than-ideal internet, Instructions for “offline” updates will be available when the DVD is available.)
  • Using Faithlife, users can collaborate on custom documents, such as notes, reading plans, or visual filters.

Multi-Language Interface

  • The Logos engine allows the user to work in French, Spanish, German, Dutch, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Swedish, Afrikaans, or English. This means non-native English speakers will have a greater likelihood of being able to access resources through a language of wider communication in which they are more fluent, rather than being required to work in English. Other language user interfaces may become available in the future, and this will enable us to provide more non-English resources.

Biblical People, Places, Things, Events, and Media

  • Bible Facts: This is the new name for a tool that gives access to extra resources about Biblical People, Places, Things and Events.
    • Was Romans written before or after Corinthians? Find their authorship in the Timeline alongside other Biblical and non-Biblical events in history.
    • Can you trace Paul's journeys? You can browse zoomable maps that help to understand the layout of the Biblical world.
    • Can you name all of Joseph's brothers? Bible Facts gives access to Family trees of Biblical people, major or minor.

Personal Book Builder

  • Do you have personal notes, comments, or articles that you would like to be available in Logos?  You can import your Word documents into Logos, and they are instantly integrated with your library.
  • If you would like to provide your work or articles for future versions of TW, you can import and proof it to see out how the formatting will show, saving our compilers the time of re-formatting your document.

Resources are in Unicode

  • All TW Logos resources are in Unicode, which means that you can paste and cite resources in your documents without fear of future compatibility. (This accomplishment is a large part of the reason why TW Logos was so long in coming.)
  • Citations automatically appear in the format you have chosen when you paste text.
  • Use Unicode Keyboards (No Keyman Required) to type in Greek or Hebrew, or simply type in a transliteration and Logos will do the work for you.`

Access Logos Resources from ParaTExt

  • Access Logos Resources is available in the Paratext Tools menu.  This feature allows you to configure direct lookups from the original language tool in Paratext that jump directly to a particular resource or set of resources in Logos.  This can be done because Paratext and Logos use the same Unicode format for Hebrew and Greek, whereas, Folio can't receive such input because it still uses legacy fonts.

Window Management

  • Logos allows you to save desktops full of open resources and arrange these resources as you like. You can arrange them side-by-side, or conserve space by hiding less-frequently used resources in tabs behind similar resources, ready at a moment's notice.  You can also open a "floating" window and arrange even more resources if you have multiple monitors. Lastly, you can add shortcuts to common resources to save steps next time you want them.
