BALSA – Basic Language Software Appliance.
Balsa is a hardware+software computer solution for use by language workers in remote areas, where power for computer use is a major problem and there is little or no on-site IT support. Balsa provides a variety of software for language development which assist with translation, literacy and language documentation tasks. It features a simple, easy-to-use interface, and is readily upgraded by switching out the SD card.
Balsa is distributed to end users as an image copied onto an SD card. When the SD card is inserted into a computer, Balsa sets up the computer to use the SD card as the system device. The user's data is stored on the host computer.
To upgrade Balsa, simply turn off the computer and change the SD card for one containing an upgraded version of Balsa.
