SIL's dedication to language development past and present
The SIL Converters package provides tools through which you can change the encoding, font, and/or script of text in documents. It works with Microsoft Word and other Office documents, XML documents, and SFM text and lexicon documents. It also installs a system-wide repository to manage your encoding converters and transliterators (TECkit, CC, ICU, Perl, or Python based, as well as support for adding custom transduction engines). This package is fully integrated with SIL FieldWorks, Speech Analyzer, Phonology Assistant and Adapt It software. It makes the same system-wide registry of installed encoding converters availavle to all of these programs. Additionally the package includes some extra utilities such as a clipboard converter for manipulating text between cut and paste operations. If you are an end user, you will use SIL Converters' client applications. For example, you might use the Bulk Word Document Converter to convert the encoding of text in one or more Word document to Unicode, or you might use the Bulk SFM Converter to convert an SFM-formatted Shoebox lexicon into Unicode. If you are a developer, the package provides a simple COM interface which will enable your software to select and use a converter from the repository. It is easy to use from VBA, C++, C#, Perl, Python or any .NET/COM enabled language. Developers can write to a single EncConverters interface to gain access to the available transduction resources. The latest version of SIL Converters (3.1.1) supports Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit).
