SIL Open Font License (OFL)

February, 2007

The SIL Open Font License (OFL) is a free and open source license specifically designed for fonts and related software. It was created by SIL to provide a legal framework and infrastructure for the worldwide development of collaborative font and software projects, and to support the font creation efforts of academic and linguistic communities.

The OFL meets the specific needs of typographic design and engineering as well as the gold standards of the FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) community, namely the cultural values and guidelines from the FSF, the Debian Free Software Guidelines, as well as the Open Source Definition.

The OFL reflects SIL's desire to serve the peoples of the world through research, translation, and literacy, by facilitating language-based development. To this end, the OFL is intended to enable others to participate in our projects, to enable others to cater to needs for which we don't have the resources, to share our knowledge and experience in the area of writing systems and pass on our tools, and to equip the community to meet its font needs. The OFL is now the most widely used licensing approach for non-restricted fonts and is used by many foundries around the world. There is also a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) to describe the practical aspects of using the OFL.
