STEP Course Curriculum Overview

Strengthening Tokples Education in Papua New Guinea

 

Module One: Literacy; Writer’s Workshop

· Introduction to Literacy: identify literacies used in culture; total language development; Four Elements of Literacy

· Curriculum Development: learn to make a cultural calendar; themes

· Awareness: learn how to get community and leaders involved in tokples (vernacular) literacy

· Leadership: learn about 3 levels of principle-centred leadership; 7 Habits of Effective People

· Accountability: learn to manage finances and keep accurate records

· Writer’s Workshop: learn Writing Cycle and Materials Production Cycle (stencils and silkscreens); storytelling; writing listening stories; tokples alphabets; plan a Writers’ Workshop (management)

· **Included in every module: Resource Book (Compile all notes and handouts into a teacher’s resource book); 2 basic health           lessons; inductive Bible study; computers; ESL (English as a Second Language); fluency (reading and writing in vernacular)

 

Module Two: Literacy; Curriculum Development

· Literacy: learn the Four Elements of Literacy; reading theory

· Curriculum Development: learn the process of developing curriculum through cultural calendar; goals & outcomes; theme webs;   activities; lesson plans.

· Materials Development: learn to make Big Books and write stories for Big Books

· Practice Teaching: prepare and teach a lesson using the Four Elements of Literacy

· Leadership: learn managerial and interpersonal leadership skills through planning and presentations

 

Module Three: Curriculum Development; Teaching/Learning: Principles and Practice Teaching

· Curriculum Development: learn principles for grading (sequencing) skills and materials in curriculum; timetable; weekly lesson    guide; prepare term plans for one year curriculum

· Maths: learn Maths activities and sequencing Maths skills and activities in term plans

· Materials Production: continue writing stories and producing books; teaching aids & supplementary classroom materials

· Principles of Teaching/Learning: learn about teaching/learning styles; classroom management; observe classrooms in local schools;            evaluate materials, lessons and students

· Practice Teaching: prepare lessons and practice teach integrated lessons

· Leadership: all three levels incorporated into principles of teaching/learning

 

Module Four: Teacher Training; Leadership/Management

· Leadership: review 3 levels of principle-centered leadership (personal; interpersonal; managerial); leadership traits & styles; developing a servant-leadership model within the PNG context; decision making; community ownership

· Management: learn/review managing time, finances, people, resources, records

· Planning: plan for a Teacher Training Workshop

· Teacher Training: learn principles; practice portions of Teacher Training Workshop

· Curriculum Development: review and continue work on one year curriculum

· Materials Production: write and produce more materials beyond Term 1: Shell book, predictable stories;

                 charts and other teaching aids

 

Module Five: Adult Literacy

· Leadership/Management: long range planning-1year, 5 year plans, budget

· Materials Production: books, charts, posters, teaching aids, storage boxes, etc.

· Curriculum Development: developing an adult curriculum

· Adult Literacy Issues: health; spiritual-SIU; social issues; agriculture; community development

· Literacy/Numeracy: levels – preliterate to fluent; transfer, fluency ideas; Maths

· Principles of Adult Teaching/Learning

· Practice Teaching: adult curriculum and adult teaching/learning principles

Children’s Literacy

· Leadership/Management: long range planning- 1 year, 5 year plans, budget

· Materials Production: continue producing books for one year prep curriculum; some teaching aids; writing good Bible stories,       storage boxes, etc.

· Curriculum Development: finish writing term plans for one year prep; continue with theme webs, weekly lesson guides, lesson plans               for one year curriculum

· Literacy/Numeracy: Maths activities; fluency; learning activities

· Principles of Teaching/Learning: student assessment and reporting

· Children’s Education in PNG: compare Elementary Reform and nonformal prep school
