Abstract:

Cassava is the staple food of approximately 400 million people in the tropics. It can probably boast of being the world's cheapest source of food calories. In Asia, cassava is known as a poor man's crop with rice being the starch of choice. This bibliography contains three sections: author/title, geographical area, and topic. Annotations are found in the author/title sections. Research is needed on the marketing potential of cassava and on whether or not technological advances in cassava production could have an impact on human consumption, especially in the poorer, rural areas of the world.

1. Introduction

This bibliography covers books and articles dealing with cassava. It is meant to be useful to all persons interested in cassava but it is designed especially with anthropologists, linguists, sociologists and other social science researchers in mind.

In compiling this bibliography, it was often difficult to reject interesting works which were of less relevance to my stated purpose. For example, articles about cyanide and thiocyanate are not included unless they refer specifically to cassava.

This research was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Linda Jackson. She is responsible for the current interest in cassava at the University of Florida and many of the materials which I have used were provided by her.

1.1 ORGANIZATION

The body of this bibliography is organized into three sections or indexes according to author, geographic area and topic. The author/title section contains over 2,500 entries. Some of topics and geographical areas have received a great deal of attention from researchers (e.g. ANIMAL FEED - 195 entries, BRAZIL - 235 entries) while others have received very little attention (e.g. WOMEN - 15 entries, VIETNAM - 2 entries).

All books and articles are included in the section indexed by author. Materials by unknown or anonymous authors are listed in the author index by title only, using the alphabetical ordering determined by the first word(s) in the title. Partial bibliographical information is included for some works when the complete bibliographical information is unknown. Some books and articles have been included under several topics.

1.2 HOW TO USE THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY

Annotations are found in the author/title section. In some cases works have not been seen but I have obtained information about the contents from other sources. Where there is no annotation, I was able to obtain the reference but no other information.
