SIL joins observance of International Mother Language Day 2010 (February 2010) During the eleventh annual observance of International Mother Language Day, SIL representatives participated in celebrations in the Philippines, at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC and at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. Endangered languages information and infrastructure (November 2009) The Endangered Languages Information and Infrastructure Project (ELIIP) is holding a planning workshop 12–14 November in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gary Simons, Ph.D., Associate International Director of Language Program Services for SIL, is participating by chairing the working group on "Interoperation" and giving demonstrations of two parts of the existing language information infrastructure that he helps to lead, Ethnologue and OLAC. Sino-Tibetan linguistics conference: Eight SIL papers (November 2009) The 42nd International Conference on Sino-Tibetan Languages and Linguistics (ICSTLL 42) is being held 2–4 November at Payap University in Chiangmai, Thailand. Payap is hosting the conference in connection with its 35th anniversary and is co-sponsoring in association with SIL and the Thai Royal Institute. WOCAL 6—SIL presents 18 papers on African linguistics (August 2009) Eighteen SIL linguists presented papers 17–21 August at the 6th World Congress of African Linguistics (WOCAL) in Cologne, Germany. The theme of WOCAL 6 was "African Linguistics for Understanding and Progress." One SIL linguist addressed the special forum on African sign languages.
