Eunice Pike and Eugene Nida Remembered (September 2011) SIL celebrates the legacy of Eunice Pike and Eugene Nida, both of whom recently passed away. Both Pike and Nida participated in the third session of SIL courses in 1936 and went on to make major contributions to language development, linguistics and translation scholarship. 26th Graduation Ceremony of Africa International University (August 2011) On 9 July 2011, Africa International University (AIU) in Nairobi, Kenya, held its 26th graduation ceremony. Degrees were awarded to 84 graduates, including AIU’s first group of PhD students, three of whom serve with SIL partners. SIL Worker Killed in Bomb Blast (March 2011) Mary Gardner (55), was the lone fatality of a terrorist explosion on March 23 at a bus stop in Jerusalem. Gardner had been studying Hebrew at Hebrew University as part of her training to become a consultant to translators of the Old Testament. She had worked with SIL International since 1989, primarily in Togo, West Africa, as a linguist and translator among the Ife people. Read more about SIL Worker Killed in Bomb Blast

Eighth year for translation and literacy courses taught in Spanish (August 2010) On 16 August, the largest class of students is beginning its second semester of study at the eighth session of the Curso Internacional de Lingüística, Traducción y Alfabetización (CILTA)*. The students come from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela. CILTA trains Spanish speakers for cross-cultural language-based service to assist local communities in protecting, preserving and developing their languages.
