What we do

Translation in SIL focuses on:

• Partnership with language communities around the world;
• Training programs, both formal and informal;
• Technical services, providing publications and consultant assistance for translators; and,
• Research and development in translation theory and practice.

SIL is currently involved in various aspects of translation work in partnership with speakers of more than 1,000 languages around the world. The diverse ethnolinguistic contexts in which SIL works require a scholarly approach to translation based on current translation theory. Wherever possible, SIL seeks to work with national and international translation organizations in cooperative efforts to provide the necessary training, and technical and consultant services needed in each situation.
