Over the last decade I have been involved
in many typeface development projects as part of SIL International.
Projects for which I have been the main (or only) designer

I have also worked on as-yet-unreleased projects from Asia,
Africa and the Americas.
My latest project is an extended Latin type family—Gentium—designed
as part of my University program. It is intended to be a general
text face for broad use, but specifically tuned for 9-12 point
text. The design is based on ideas from my own calligraphic
experiments, but within the boundaries of a sturdy text face.
It is also intended, from the beginning, to be an extended
Latin face, with special features that make it ideal for use
with languages that need special characters and diacritics.
In December 2001, Gentium was one of the winners of the bukva:raz!
international type competition, sponsored by the Association
Typographique Internationale (ATypI) in celebration of
the United Nations Year
of Dialogue Among Civilizations (2001). It is featured
in a recent book—Language Culture Type: International
Type Design in the Age of Unicode—edited by John
Berry and published by Graphis. It was also exhibited with
other winners at the Rome
ATypI conference in September 2002, and will be shown
at exhibitions in Moscow, St. Petersburg and in the main lobby
of the United Nations in New York.
