  • Description

This text consists of short descriptions of several wild animals that inhabit the mountains and valleys of the vast Tepehuan region. It helps preserve the knowledge of how these animals have affected Tepehuan daily life for centuries. It was written and illustrated by a resident of Santa María Ocotán who observed these animals as he guarded his family’s cattle as a boy. Later, when he was in forestry school, he wrote down his recollections of them.

The form of presentation is called “glossed text,” because it includes both literal translations of every word and morpheme and free translations of every sentence. The free translations are summarized in paragraph form at the end.
