Recommended Software for Viewing SIL Electronic Book Reviews

Here is a list of the software that is required or recommended for viewing the SIL Electronic Book Reviews.

Web browser

Book reviews are presented in HTML, the document markup language of Web documents. Any Web browser that supports in-line graphics and tables should be able to display them.

IPA fonts and other “special characters”

Some book reviews include IPA or other non-Roman characters. To view these properly, you must have a Unicode-aware operating system and Web browser, as well as a font that contains those character glyphs. Book reviews containing IPA text have been successfully tested with the following operating systems:

The latest versions of most Web browsers for these operating systems are capable of displaying Unicode text.

If your operating system is Unicode-aware but IPA characters still do not appear properly, you may have to (a) upgrade your web browser software and/or (b) obtain a Unicode font that contains IPA characters. Gentium is a Unicode font containing IPA characters, available for download free from SIL. Other widely available fonts containing IPA characters are Arial Unicode MS and Lucida Grande.

Note on Arial Unicode MS:
Arial Unicode MS is the default Unicode font for the Windows operating system. If you find that this font is not installed on your computer, please consult the following web page for instructions on how to install it: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q287/2/47.asp

Even if your browser and operating system do not properly display IPA text, “normal” text should display properly. We beg your indulgence, and hope you will not be too greatly inconvenienced.
