(August 2010) On 16 August, the largest class of students is beginning its second semester of study at the eighth session of the Curso Internacional de Lingüística, Traducción y Alfabetización (CILTA)*. The students come from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela. CILTA trains Spanish speakers for cross-cultural language-based service to assist local communities in protecting, preserving and developing their languages.
The second semester of CILTA has two tracks—translation and literacy. The translation track goes into advanced linguistics and its application to translation, and leads to a diploma or certificate in linguistics and translation. The literacy track focuses on community-based literacy and education, particularly introducing it to preliterate societies, and leads to a diploma or certificate in linguistics and literacy. The first semester, which concluded 16 July, introduced linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology-syntax, semantics-pragmatics, sociolinguistics and language program planning.
The annual CILTA program is hosted and accredited by the Ricardo Palma University in Lima, Peru, and is conducted by SIL. Instructors this semester include SIL personnel and instructors from Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica and Peru.
