SIL's dedication to language development past and present
(January 2008) Bringing a wide range of experience in linguistics and administration, Fredrick A. Boswell has moved into the role of Executive Director for SIL International. Boswell has served SIL as Vice President for Academic Affairs, International Translation Coordinator and Entity Director for SIL Solomon Islands.
Executive Director Boswell worked as a field linguist and translation advisor with the Cheke Holo language community in the Solomon Islands on Central Santa Isabel Island. He is a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, The Netherlands (expected completion date April 2008). In addition to his long-term field assignment in the Solomon Islands, he has lived and worked in Peru and Papua New Guinea.
Asked about his immediate goals as incoming Executive Director, Boswell stated:
During my first year in office, I will give strong attention to relationship-building, both with our partner organizations and our SIL staff. I will assess our starting points for improving and accomplishing our specialty task of language development among the ethnolinguistic minority communities which we serve. We are particularly focused on increasing our efforts of building capacity among the members of those communities to carry out language-related work.
As we strive to make an impact in each of the 1,400 language groups among whom we are currently working, SIL is ready to implement new strategies and adjust our existing structures as necessary to help accomplish their desired goals for language development. We are conscious these efforts will not be carried out in isolation, but will only be successful when done in significant cooperation among like-minded agencies, institutions, communities and individuals.
The President of SIL International, Dr. Carolyn Miller, affirmed Boswell's appointment by stating, "I am very pleased that Boswell has agreed to accept the Board's appointment as Executive Director. His experience as a field linguist, as an administrator, and as a representative for the organization in interaction with partners has prepared him well for the role. His demonstrated ability to build a strong team and his innovative approach will enable him to lead change while preserving unity within the organization."
Boswell is a member of both the Linguistic Society of America and the Society of Biblical Literature. Although his new position will involve extensive travel around the world to connect with colleagues and partners, Boswell and his family will live in Dallas, Texas, near SIL International's headquarters.
Boswell's appointment as SIL Executive Director follows the tenure of Dr. John Watters who completed his maximum term limit.
