SIL's dedication to language development past and present
Empowering individuals and social groups requires a comprehensive set of policies and institutions. From education and health care to economic and social policy, activities that seek to empower people are expected to increase opportunities and improve people's quality of life.
-Ms. Larysa Belskaya, Vice-Chair of the Commission's Bureau
(February 2013) Dave Pearson and Maralee Gutierrez will represent SIL at the 51st Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development. Delegates to the 6-15 February event will focus on how government agencies and NGOs can best support communities in their efforts to achieve goals such as poverty eradication and equitable access to employment.
Pearson and Gutierrez will advocate for the important role of language development in efforts for social development, such as achieving the Millennium Development Goals. SIL is committed to partnership with the world’s ethnolinguistic minority communities as they discover how language development addresses the challenging areas of their daily lives—social, cultural, political, economic and spiritual.
SIL has formal consultative relations with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
