SIL's dedication to language development past and present
(February 2010) The North East Indian Linguistics Society held its fifth international conference 12–14 February, with optional workshops on the preceding two days. It was hosted by the Department of Linguistics, Gauhati University, Assam, India. The conference venue was the Don Bosco Institute in the Kharguli Hills district of Guwahati.
One of the workshops was a demonstration of The Field Linguist’s Toolbox, a data management and analysis software tool that has been widely used by field linguists. It is especially useful for maintaining lexical data and for providing interlinear syntactic and semantic annotations in texts, but it can be used to manage virtually any kind of data. Toolbox is built on The Linguist’s Shoebox, but adds Unicode support, among other enhancements.
SIL has developed over 60 distinct software applications to support the work of its field staff, most available for free download.
