SIL's dedication to language development past and present
To help people understand why decisions were made on an orthography, it is extremely helpful to write up an orthography guide, documenting what the orthography is, and why decisions were made one way rather than another. It is a historical record, and will help local speakers of the language, linguistics and literacy workers, government officials, and probably others. Also, if there is a movement to change the orthography later on, an orthography statement will tell the reformers why certain choices were made.
