Pacific Institute of Languages, Arts and Translation (PILAT)

Ukarumpa, Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea

PILAT is a joint training venture of SIL PNG and the PNG Bible Translation Association (PNG BTA).

The mission of PILAT is to support the work of Language Development and Bible Translation in the Pacific through training in translation principles, Bible background, Biblical languages, translation software, linguistics, literacy and exegesis.

Most courses are held at the Training Centre in Ukarumpa (Eastern Highlands Province).  The Training Centre includes fully-equipped classrooms, men’s and women’s dormitories and a dining hall. Course participants benefit from living, eating and studying in modern, well-equipped facilities, and surrounded by the beautiful Aiyura Valley.  PILAT courses are also run in other regional centres around the country.

Courses range from one to six weeks and are sequenced to develop competencies at a vocational certificate level.

The primary language of instruction is English, followed by Tok Pisin for some courses.

These courses prepare students for work in the following roles:

  • Mother Tongue Translator
  • Translation Consultant
  • Literacy Worker
  • Community Development Worker
