Abstract:
This paper presents two versions of the Lord’s prayer in Mixtec. One is from the catechism of Gonzales, published in 1719 for the area of Nochixtlán and Cuilapan; the other is included in a volume published by the Vatican in 1870 that contains the Lord’s prayer in 250 languages. The two versions are analyzed using the two principal sources for Mixtec during the colonial period, which are the vocabulary of Alvarado and the grammar of De los Reyes, both published in 1593, and also some information from modern varieties of Mixtec. The two translations are compared to each other, and Gonzales’ translation is found to contain a more idiomatic form of Mixtec than the Vatican translation. This Vatican version is not identified with any town in the published book, but can be traced to the Nochixtlán area by the form of the language.
