Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to study the phonological system of the Lahu Bakeo language spoken by the Bakeo people living at Ban Huay Masang, Mae Suay District, Chiang Rai province, Thailand. The general information about Lahu is presented in chapter one. Chapter two presents five previous phonological analyses of different dialects of the Lahu language. Bakeo segmental phonology is presented in chapter three. Every Lahu Bakeo syllable is made up of an obligatory consonant followed by an obligatory vowel nucleus and tone. Its structure is presented as CVT. Stress in Lahu Bakeo is predictable. The phonology of Lahu Bakeo consists of twenty seven initial consonant phonemes. The vowel system consists of nine vowel phonemes.Consonant clusters and vowel diphthongs are borrowed from other languages. In chapter four, the suprasegmental phonology of Bakeo is presented. A computer software called 'CECIL' is used to analyze the sound wave to give the pitch level of each utterance. There are seven phonologically distinct tones in Lahu Bakeo. There are four falling, one rising and two level tones. Two of them are glottalized tones.
