Abstract:
Diebu Tibetan is a Tibetan dialect spoken in the northeastern corner of the Tibetan Plateau in Sichuan’s Ruergai County and in Gansu’s Diebu County. This study explores language attitudes and language use among Diebu speakers. The findings of this study reveal that Diebu is seen by mother tongue speakers as being inherently part of their identity and is thus greatly valued. The broad use of the Diebu dialect in this region, except for the infrequent occasion when they must use Chinese to communicate either with Han Chinese or with non-Diebu speaking Tibetans, reveals Diebu’s strong language vitality. Many mother tongue Diebu Tibetan speakers are also bilingual in Chinese.
