Abstract:

The purpose of this sociolinguistic survey of Meitei was to gather information that would be used to plan a language-development program for the Meitei living in Bangladesh. We wanted to know whether the Meitei language varies in any significant ways throughout their community and, from a sociolinguistic point of view, whether there are clear reasons to warrant literature production and/or literacy programs in Meitei. Just as importantly, we wanted to know the community’s attitude towards such programs.
