FLEx (FieldWorks Language Explorer)

FLEx (FieldWorks Language Explorer) is a feature-rich program for dictionary compilation and text analysis.

FLEx supports mutiple users colloborating on one project via a Send/Receive feature, which includes intelligent merging of work. cultural observations and morphological grammar testing.

A command in FLEx (in the File menu) to start up RAMP and prepare an upload package of a FieldWorks backup file for submission to the REAP repository.

FLEx works seamlessly on the Windows and Linux platforms allowing users on both platforms to collaborate.

When starting FieldWorks, a number of choices including opening the last project that was edited. This dialog will be shown every time unless opting to have FieldWorks auto-open the last edited project, as it did previously.

  • Add words under a semantic domain to create entries rapidly (See Dictionary (index) where entries are grouped by Semantic Domain.
  • Powerful bulk editing tools save hours (or weeks) of repetitive work.
  • Export Dictionary to wide variety of formats using Pathway including publishing to Webonary.
  • Find relevant semantic domains using a find or have FLEx propose potentially relevant semantic domains based on the gloss, definition and reversal entries of the current sense.
  • Configure Collect Words (was Categorized Entry) allows many more fields  to be displayed in Collect Words view and the ability to enter data into either lexeme or citation form, gloss or definition according to preference.
  • Configures the fields shown in Classified Dictionary (a semantically classified list of entries) and exports this view to XHTML.

  • Optional use of morphological parser to suggest analyses for new words based on data in Lexicon and Grammar areas.

  • Organize texts by genre and include/exclude from concordance searches and other views.
  • Includes spell-check.
  • Complex Concordance performs concordance searches for combinations of requirements, e.g., a specific word (or gloss) followed by a word that has a specific grammatical category.
